Ok I might have lied... I have two more projects. haha I can't believe I forgot! This project was in my Computer Design I class. This class we continue learning AutoCAD and Revit towards the end. For this project we were given a floor plan and assigned to find a firm that would be potentially moving into this new space. I decided to use my roommates work called Friendemic, which is a social media marketing firm. We had to space plan offices, redesign the restrooms to be ADA, break room, and a reception area. It really depended on what company you decided to do it on. With Friendemic, I really just needed tons of office space, entertainment areas, break room, restrooms, and conversational areas. Their clients don't come into their building because they have no need for face to face interaction. I didn't really need a reception area but I included one just in case they should have important people they needed to seat.
Here is the client profile that I wrote up for the project. Client profiles help the designer understand all the needs of the client and what they exactly need to do for them.

“Friend·emic
(n.) The world's most effective social engagement. Period.”
Friendemic provides social media and online reputation
engagement services for hundreds of clients across the globe. They started in
2008 and their first client was a car dealership. The majority of their
clientele are car dealerships. Friendemic is located on 375 W 200 S in downtown Salt Lake City. They have 50 employees. These
employees are all good friends who like to chat and work at the same time. They
work on two screen MAC computers with their teams in separate rooms, with the
exception of the junior writers located on the main floor which is an open
space. They mainly use desks and roller chairs.
They use a conference room on a
weekly basis for business meetings. This conference room entails several sofas,
a table with a set of chairs, a TV screen, and a projector. They all go out
together as a company every Friday for lunch.
Friendemic’s target market are small
to medium size businesses. There is little to no flow of traffic from the
outside into their space. Clients usually get in touch through phone or email,
rarely through person to person contact. Friendemic aims to provide
social media for business related clientele who want to amp up their company
with the upcoming and new technology.
This company is trendy and with the times. They want
the style to stay clean, precise, natural, modern and overall effective. They
must be able to stay up to date with the latest technology.
There is a security guard during the day and night.
They have a security system on the building.
Needs: They would like to have more
space. It would be nice to have every team member close to one another, along
with the junior writers. The distance between the two creates minor problems.
This way there will be effective communication and connection between team
members.
Also, a good suggestion would be to
have optimal standing desks with high chairs for those who are wanting to
stretch and not sit for long periods of time. This will enable the employees to
work more efficiently and become more focused.
The next step was figuring out the layout and begin to space plan where things should be. I needed room for offices, conference room, break room, and a collaboration area. I just didn't know what the size was for an office! So I laid it out the best I could. It's totally too boxy and not very user friendly here, but what can I say I didn't know how it would play out with the space and furniture.

This is the furniture plan. To help us design the space and understand systems furniture, our class went on a field trip to Midwest Commercial Interiors show room and also to the Henriksen Butler Design Group. It was such a learning experience! I had no idea how awesome and amazing commercial design is! I always thought commercial design was bland and boring, but once I went to these companies showrooms and talked with the designers, I was just amazed and totally taken back. If I had the privilege to design a commercial space, I would totally jump on it.
Side note: These floor plans were printed from a plotter printer -- 18" x 24" sheet of paper. It looks so cool blown up! You can see all the details.
Anyway! There were plenty of systems furniture that I was impressed about and wanting to use for this project. The main one was an adjustable desk for the employees. My roommate would tell me how much she would hate just sitting around and staring at her computer all day. When we went to Midwest I actually was able to see some of their employees standing up and working. Kinda cool!
All the employees have this desk. Then I placed other options of seating around the space with built in privacy if they needed it. Like this one here:
I don't know about you, but I would totally use this bad boy all the time. I selected all the furniture from Steelcase. They have some pretty awesome stuff. Go check them out.
This one is by far my favorite! It's called a Walkstation and literally you walk on it and work at the same time. Yeah pretty awesome. I put one in the collaboration center area just for kicks.
The rest of the furniture I selected were pretty simple and down to earth. I selected a couple of conversational sofas, high bar seating (just to spice it up!), regular table and chairs for the break room, etc. etc.
Here is the finished floor plan! The weird triangle things are material references which tell what type of flooring, wall color, and trim are in each space.
Here's the finished furniture plan. Pretty self explanatory.
I chose pretty basic paint colors. The red is an accent wall in the break room and restrooms -- just to add a bit of color.
Here's the flooring. The carpet on the left is throughout the entire space except the break room and the restroom -- that's the far right flooring. The middle carpet sample would frame the far left.
We literally had to do about a million elevations. Ok maybe like 12 but it seriously felt like an eternity until I was finished with them! This is the Kitchenette wall. Straight lines, sleek, clean. Keepin it classy.
This is just an idea of what the desks would be like in the offices. I might have gotten a little crazy and went over board. Whoops.
P.S. I don't really know what's goin on with my font sizes. Something funky that's all I know. ;)

This is the long wall in both restrooms. The bunny is Friendemic's logo (and don't ask me why it's a bunny. I asked my roommate and she just said it was because they liked it. haha) so I thought it would be fun to do a vinyl detail there.
And here is an idea of what the reception area would look like. Those lines are showing that there are floor to ceiling windows behind the sofa.
And that is basically it! We didn't have to make color boards for this project since it was a computer class. Thank goodness for that. One gets really over doing a gazillion color boards.
So yeah that's the end! Yay!
xoxo,
Meagan
