First Semester Down

My first semester of college has come and gone. I have absolutely loved studying Interior Design here! It's so beautiful here in lovely Salt Lake, I just had to capture this a couple weeks ago. It's only snowed a couple times and melts right away so the Californian in me has been totally teased! When I come home from Redlands for break I just KNOW it will be a total blizzard.

Here's the crew. We walked over to see the spectacular lights the Sunday it came on. So beautiful! I can't even imagine how long it must have taken them to put all the lights on. And on nearly every branch! Bravo workers. Bravo.

This semester's finals were pretty fun. Intense but still fun. One project was interviewing a teacher at the BC. I had a Business teacher and it was so fun! He was ready for any kind of ideas. This is what I wrote up for the Client Profile (basically outlines what I put together and the reasons):

"Ken DuVall and his wife are looking for some change in their house, specifically the living room. They have agreed on an unlimited budget. Ken and his wife have been married for 30 years and are going on a mission next month. They are proud grandparents of 20 grandchildren and have five children. Overall, they are looking for a space to accommodate all the people they love in their life but also live in a comfortable, aesthetic room.
The Living Room requests are: comfortable, cozy, relaxing space for Ken and his family. Anyone is permitted in this area. Ken is open to many ideas for this room. He wants new, fresh ideas. The couple like to travel and have many accessories to display. With all this in mind, Ken has given the direction of warm color, beautiful fabrics, and pattern, simple yet refined. They want to portray themselves as a loving, educational, and most of all, spiritual couple. Ken has requested to stay with carpet and suggests the TV stay in the spot because it is mounted to the wall. A bookcase, furniture that holds storage and artistic accessories that show their life is mandatory to both of them.
Ken will go along with anything, as long as it’s not pastels. The living room is located right next to the kitchen and has doors the open out and down some steps. There are two windows on the opposite of the TV which allow wonderful natural light.
Result: Because of their warm color preferences and trips abroad, I selected a classical theme for this room. The three walls, not including the wall that holds the TV, has a creamy tone with an LRV of 48% which will allow a feeling of comfort in the room because it isn’t too bright or too dark. The accent wall, a warm neutral, called Relaxed Khaki, was chosen to add depth and visual interest. Its LRV is 52% will add depth to the room because it is a little darker and will reflect less light, which is what is wanted because of the mounted TV.
Two dark brown, plush leather reclining sofas were selected to help with the relaxation requested. Three textured pillows will be placed on the sofas in order to bring in some color. A Benchwright Square Side Table from Pottery Barn is in between the sofas to aid with reading or whatever the user is working on. A Benchwright Rectangular Coffee Table from Pottery Barn also aids with storage and display. On both sides of the sofas are Brooklyn Upholstered Armchairs with a classical red pattern to tie in character and texture in the space. A Benchwright TV Stand from Pottery Barn is placed right beneath the mounted TV to aid to more storage if needed. Two Benchwright Bookcases are in the corner, left of the TV to help with displaying the couples travel treasures and accessories.
In the middle of the room there is a 9-Light Spanish Bronze Chandelier which will bring in extra light needed at night. A beige plush carpet is all throughout the room, as per Ken’s request. Crown molding will finish off the windows and there are beige drapes to tie in the cream wall color and beige carpet."

I met with Mr. DuVall prior to my presentation and he seemed pretty impressed and in favor of the selections that I picked out. I loved doing this project. It felt almost real life!
xoxo,
Meg
